Spectacle Eyeworks : Be as Fancy as You Want to Be

When I was looking for eyewear to review for this year, I had high standards. I wanted high quality, of course, but I also wanted some specs with serious style.

More criteria: Since my usual choice for eyewear is boxy, unisex black frames, I was told by my eye doctor, "try some color - you always get black."

First I found some gorgeous purple titanium frames by ProDesign, one of my favorite eyewear companies. Next, I found some very hip blue retro frames from a designer just down the road, in Portland, Amy Sacks. Still, I wanted more. And I wanted to get past the rectangle shape that is ubiquitous this year in everyone's lines. Finally, I found another unique frame from a funky eyewear company in Vancouver, B.C., Spectacle Eyeworks.

If you're looking for a variety of frame shapes, and especially, if you'd like to find a frame with more attitude, S.E. has several lines that are super fun. You can go bold, funky, super funky, or, like me, find a pair with flair that you can still wear to work and around town without feeling like you're making a big statement.

The PG-28 frames are from SE's Pussy Galore line. I'm a huge fan of metal frames; they just always seem to feel and fit better on my cute, small face. I especially like the matte finish on the metal frames from SE.

I picked the PG-28 because I liked the shape and the color choices: teal, red, brown, black, and pink. What won me over were the unique and delicate cloisonné decorations at the temples. It's a subtle and elegant feature that makes my glasses more interesting and kinda girly but still classy. I love them. When I wear my fancy teal cloisonné-adorned specs I feel like a geeky but sexy librarian or one of those young girls who wears peasant dresses with tennis shoes but still looks really foxy.

SE has a variety of men's and women's frames in all shapes, colors, sizes, and styles. There are several cloisonné styles with different colors and frame shapes, as well as frames made out of acetate.

Bottom Line: I love these sweet frames. They're fancy and subtle at the same time. And, of course, I have another pair of SE specs, different style, in black. Couldn't resist.--E.D. (Aug 09)
