Oboz Hardscrabble Shoe : Ready for Action

My new Oboz Hardscrabble trail shoes are ideal for a variety of adventures. I've been living in these action-ready shoes for two weeks, and it's been long enough to know they have exactly what I like in a trail shoe.

I was so happy when my Hardscrabble shoes showed up a few days before I was headed out on a bike camping trip with family and friends. Space and weight were going to be limited, so I was way stoked to have a shoe that I could wear for biking, hiking, wading, scrambling, and kicking around camp.

I know the Hardscrabble is a trail running shoe but it's also an excellent bicycle shoe. I was very appreciative that the sole doesn't flare out (as typical with some running shoes) because that means they don't hit the crank arm when I'm pedaling. It was also a nice feature when climbing on boulders in the river to fetch water because they're less likely to get wedged in tight places.

The highly breathable upper made them plenty light and airy for lounging around camp or doing chores. I stepped in wet muck a few times, but a few minutes in the sun and my shoes were dry.

The Hardscrabble also offered ample support, thanks to a rugged sole, for day hikes from camp.

I have a mildly wide forefoot and narrow heel and these fit my feet nicely. It's worth checking out the other Oboz styles as well. My 18-month-old Oboz Firebrand shoes are still holding up perfectly. (See other Oboz reviews: Yellowstone II Boot and Ignition Trail Shoe.)

The Hardscrabble shoe is available in men's and women's sizes.

Bottom Line : The Hardscrabble shoe is an excellent choice for all-purpose outdoor footwear. --A.S. (June '10)
