Merrell Rove Tech Jacket : Frigid Water Did Not Fill My Nostrils!

I'd like to build this gear story around a cool place and a tight situation.

My preferred dispatch going something like this..... "Pressed against the frozen cliff face on the East Ridge of Wolf's Head in the Wind River Range, I unzipped the breast pocket of my warm, water-resistant Rove Tech jacket, dialed my wife on the cell phone - hoping desperately for a signal - and shouted, 'Honey, this jacket is so thoughtfully designed that I want you to have it should I not make it home!"   (Certainly, ever since a piece I wrote on white-water kayaking that began with the line "Frigid water filled my nostrils" was reprinted in a high-school composition textbook, it's been my preferred approach.)

But journalistic integrity compels me to admit that during the month I've been wearing this lightweight, versatile jacket, I've ventured nowhere more exotic than the park in my gentrified Brooklyn neighborhood or done anything more adventurous than coach a pre-teen girls' soccer team.   (It rained hard in the fourth quarter and we were trailing 0-1, a situation more stressful to me than ice climbing.)   But I feel I've given my Rove Tech a fair trial; the weather in NYC this November has been sufficiently cold, windy, and wet to approximate a week of camping in Big Sky country.

With 100 grams of PrimaLoft insulation in the body and 60 grams in the sleeves, the jacket is sleek and lightweight but surprisingly warm. (PrimaLoft is a technical down-like insulation that provides more warmth with less bulk.) When temperatures are in the 40s and 50s, the jacket provides ample warmth worn alone. When the mercury drops below freezing, it's a great first layer worn underneath a heavier jacket.

Then there are the aesthetics. How do I know the Rove Tech is a great-looking jacket? More than a few people have said, "Hey, that's a great-looking jacket!" Better yet, the Rove Tech features four well-placed zippered pockets, including an internal pocket for my wallet or other valuables and an "invisible" outer chest pocket that provides easy access to my cell phone for when I come upon a patch of soggy leaves on a slick sidewalk and it turns out this time it's the big one.

Available in black, moss, or brick. Sizes S-XXL.

Bottom Line : Handsome, versatile, and lightweight, this wind- and water-resistant technical jacket is perfect on a vertical wall or ice or ice skating in the park.--J.G. (Nov 08)
