H20 Audio iS2 and Waterproof Speakers : Summer Splash
I have never exercised to music. For me, going for a run or swimming laps is a meditative exercise as much as a physical exercise.
Still, I like to bring my music to woodsy and beachy outings. Occasionally I get on a boat. And I often walk miles in the rain to run my errands to do my grocery shopping (I've got a huge waterproof pack). Those are all times when my H20 Audio iS2 comes in handy.
The iS2 is an ingenious weatherproof housing for the 2nd gen iPod shuffle that's made out of hard polycarbonate and pliable silicone. It's takes some practice to assemble and disassemble the device, but it's worth it. The key is to follow the instructions to the letter. And don't forget to use the lubricating gel as directed; this product helps maintain the waterproof seal. It's waterproof up to 10 feet.
Next, the Waterproof Headphones, which have a tangle-free cord (nice!) and come with an extra set of silicone waterproof earplugs. Once I had the housing secured and found the right fit with the earplugs, I was good to go. The plug from the headphones fits into a watertight plug-in on the housing. And then there I was, walking in the rain to my favorite Jayhawks album.
It's about a 30-40 minute walk to Whole Foods from my house, so I was pretty well soaked from just above my knees where my rain coat ended to my ankles. Thanks to my rain hat and waterproof shoes -- my head and feet stayed dry.
Because these headphones are designed for active water sports, they stay put. They wrap around the back of my head and have ear clips that wrap around each ear. They do not slip or slide at all. So, I just kept them on in the store. As I strolled through the organic fruit section, my mixed playlist came on. A little Bowie, a little Marley, Dylan, Elvis Costello, English Beat, all the way through to the sushi stand where I loaded up on poached salmon rolls.
The walk home is brutal because it's all uphill. A steady incline for about half an hour, then straight up to the top of the hill I live on - 500" above Whole Foods/sea level. That takes about 20 minutes. Thankfully, my playlist had turned into my Clash boxed set. I marched up that hill in a fury, didn't even notice the rain. And I smiled the entire way.
Now that I'm starting to get back into swimming after a long absence from the pool, I'll be bringing my iS2.
