Ground Terra Jacket : Warmth without Bulk
Ever since I got my Terra jacket, I’ve been grabbing it every time I head out the door for my outdoor activities. I also seem to end up throwing it on when I’m just heading out on the town...or sitting around the house, too.
This lightweight fleece jacket has kept me very comfortable on my hikes in the mountains and on daily walks on urban forest trails. With the fall chill in the air, the Terra’s moisture- and heat-managing fabric makes it an ideal piece for layering, too. I’ve been wearing it under a fitted shell or just under a vest, and it's a great way to get the warmth I need without adding bulk. On warmer cool days, this jacket is all I need over a turtleneck or t-shirt.
I like the slash zippered pocket on the chest, where I throw my car keys, credit cards, and driver’s license when I hit the trail for a brisk walk. This feature also keeps any extra bulk away from my waist area, which I appreciate when I'm wearing a day pack with a lumbar belt or a lumbar pack.
From a pure style perspective, I like what Ground has done with the two-toned fabric. The two-toned diagonal, horizontal, and vertical panels are a nice change from the usual monotone styles. My gear goddess friend, Julie, likes my Terra jacket so much that she kindly suggested that I might want to give it to her! I think not.
Bottom Line: The Terra is a great three- to four-season micro-fleece jacket, ideal for layering because of its trim fit and high-tech, moisture-wicking fabric. I plan on wearing it often this winter while downhill, cross-country, and backcountry skiing.--J.I. (Nov. '05)
