EMS Thunderhead Jacket

II was looking for a reliable entry-level rain jacket that wouldn’t bust my budget.  So I was happy to find the EMS Thunderhead Jacket, an affordable, effective rain coat for trail and town.

The EMS Thunderhead Jacket, available in men’s and women’s styles, is made out of a lightweight, breathable, waterproof nylon. It has all the features I want, such as sealed seams, pit zips for ventilation, generous front pockets, and an adjustable hood.

I’ve been wearing the Thunderhead Jacket for daily hikes and walks for a few months, now, and it has always kept me dry and provided some wind protection, too.  I like that the pocket and pit zips are located under flaps of material; this design keeps the zipper pulls out of my way and protects the zippers from rain. The back hood toggle is also hidden in its own garage!  I really like that there’s a way to roll down the hood and secure it with a Velcro tab when I don’t need it.

The EMS Thunderhead Jacket has pull toggles on the inside of each hem so I can easily cinch the jacket tighter when needed.  I like the little patch of soft material EMS uses on the inside of the collar; it feels nicer against the front of my neck than the stiffer shell would on its own. This jacket has a loose fit, so there’s plenty of room underneath for an insulation jacket or bulky fleece top. It seems to be the typical rain jacket length, which is several inches longer than a waist-length jacket.

The EMS Thunderhead Jackets is available in a variety of fun, bold colors, such as Festive Fuschia, Grenadine, Deep Lake, Meadow Green, English Ivy, and Black, in sizes XS-XL.  The men’s Thunerhead Jacket is available in S-XXL in Black, Rifle Green, Bombay Brown, and Limoges/Dress Blue. I tested a women’s size L, my usual size, and found a good fit.

Pair this with EMS Thunderhead Pant (click for review).

Bottom Line: An affordable jacket I can count on to keep me dry. --E.D. (June 2012)
