Detours Small Panniers Set
After years of running errands by foot, I'm slowly adding cycling to the mix. Detours' Small Panniers Set has helped me with the transition.
Made out of water-resistant nylon, the Small Panniers Set has just enough room for a change of clothes (and shoes) and a cosmetics bag or a full-size bag of groceries. The bags are also small enough to fit into a locker, so I can now cycle to the gym.
The Detours Small Panniers Set is easy to use. Each bag snaps onto my Blackburn bike rack in just a second and has an adjustable strap to secure the bag to the rack. I just toss in my stuff, pull the cinch cord to seal in my gear, then secure the top flap of each bag with its thick buckle.
I like that the Small Panniers Set bags are reinforced with a strong, rubbery material at the bottom and along the edge of the top flap. On drizzly days a lot of crud gets kicked up, so I'm glad the bottoms of the bags are easy to wipe clean. I also appreciate the 3M Scotchlite reflective strips on the sides of the bag; a little visibility is always a good thing.
I've used other panniers in the past, but I think I like the Detours Small Panniers Set the best because the bags are just the right size to carry what I need for an afternoon out and about. I don't like loading up my bike like a pack camel; I prefer lighter, smaller bags that keep me feeling nimble, and I like that these bags have four attachment points. Once I arrive at my destination, the bags have nylon handles, so I just tote them wherever I go. If they were bigger, they'd be too cumbersome to use off my bike.
Finally, I really like that the Small Panniers Set comes with two rain covers, one for each bag. The covers are waterproof, bright yellow, and each has two reflective strips. Since I worry about cars seeing me, I have been using the covers even on dry days. They're elasticized, so they're super easy to put on. Since it hasn't been raining much lately, I've been holding a cover-clad bag under the shower for several minutes to test the waterproofness; so far, no leaks!
Volume: 1200 cubic inches
Dimensions: 11 x 6 x 12 inches
Bottom Line: I'm very happy with the Detours Small Pannier Set. It carries well, it's easy too use, and it's not too heavy or too bulky. E.D. (Jan 2012)
