Columbia Back Up Windefend Straight Leg Pant

I'm committed to my daily power walk-- rain or shine--so I need exercise pants that stand up to winter weather (which is quite rainy where I live). Columbia's Women's Back Up Windefend Straight Leg Pant has been the ideal winter pant for me!

Before I tested these pants I either wore hard shell rain pants or running tights for exercising. But neither were ideal: hard shell pants were too baggy and crinkly for running and brisk walking and running tights were too tight to wear around town when I wanted to combine a long walk with running errands. The Back Up Windefend Straight Leg Pant isn't waterproof, but I've found it provides adequate water resistance for hour-long walks in drizzle or light rain. I've been wearing this pant for weeks and enjoying the ease of wearing a stretchy pant that provides rain protection, too.

Columbia's Back Up Windefend Straight Leg Pant has a windproof front panel that's also effective at wicking. So, as I heat up, the fabric pulls sweat off my skin and blocks wind, too. Anyone who's ever worn the wrong gear knows how cold you can get when sweat stays on your skin and cold wind penetrates your clothes!

On a recent outing, the Back Up Windefend Straight Leg Pant kept me just the right temperature on a long exercise and errand-running mission. During my five-mile route, I made a lot of stops to do some holiday shopping. By the time I was ready to return home, the sun had gone down and the temperatures had dropped. No problem. The pant did a great job of preventing the thigh burn I've experienced when wearing running tights in cold temps (30-40 F). I stayed comfortable and dry.

I also felt fine wearing the Back Up Windefend Straight Leg Pant around town because while its body-hugging, the pant is not tight at all. The straight leg cut also makes the pant less conspicuous as a "gym" pant. I like the extra-wide waist panel (only the top half contains a 2-inch wide elastic band inside the panel) which is a bit higher in the back of the pant than the front. I'm usually a fan of very low-rise pants, but this wide waist pant has such as easy fit that I don't mind the mid-rise. I think this style will fit a variety of women.

Available in black, sizes XS-XL. I'm usually a size 10 in pants, and found a size M to fit well. If you're between sizes and want a snug fit, you may want to choose the smaller size. Columbia also makes a Windefend Pant for men.

Bottom Line: A great all-around pant for cold, windy, rainy winter exercise sessions!--E.D. (Dec 2011)
