Columbia Tech Trekker Jacket

When I walked into the Columbia store and spotted the Women’s Tech Trekker Jacket, the first thing I did was look for a Columbia logo.  To my delight, I only found a tiny symbol near the hem of the jacket.  Thank you, Columbia.

I’m fine gearing up for the trail, but I spend most of my life in the city.  And I want to look cool.  All the time.  The Tech Trekker Jacket is one of the coolest jackets I’ve found this year.

It’s cut slim and slightly longer than waist length (I’m 6’ tall and love the low-rise jeans, so I always want tops and jackets to be longer), which is ideal.  Too many women’s jackets are too short through the torso, so wind blows up the front of the jacket and freezes my stomach.  The Tech Trekker Jacket is super stylish, and, it’s silver. It looks like a cross between space and spy gear, with it’s vertical baffle seams, discreet pockets, and a few well-placed snaps and grommets. There are also snap-shut cuff wraps on the sleeves, and a zippered inside pocket (and headphone port) for my iPod.

Whenever I look at my Tech Trekker Jacket, I think, “restraint,” and I can’t quite believe that such a funky jacket was made by Columbia.  It’s much more urban and hip than anything I’ve seen from them in the past.  I think Columbia has done an incredible job of designing this urban-style jacket.  They could have ruined it by fluffing it up with zipper pulls or too many snaps or by putting the word “Columbia” on it. But they didn’t.  And I love them for that!

Of course, the Tech Trekker Jacket performs well in the cold, too.  It’s lined with Omni-Heat, the silver dotted thermal material you may have seen on Columbia's website. So, the jacket is surprisingly warm even in freezing temps. I love that I can throw this jacket on over a T-shirt and instantly feel warm. The Tech Trekker Jacket is filled with a lightweight polyester that gives the jacket body without puffing it up. When fully zipped, the collar does a great job of protecting my neck from the elements.  The two side pockets are so discreet that I didn’t find them at first.  They’re large and lined with a very soft material that feels great when I need to warm up my hands in them.

Available in women’s sizes XS-XL, in black, silver, or a cool, metallic blue.

Bottom Line: What fun. Now I can stroll the city streets in style, no matter what the weather does.--E.D. May 2012
