Columbia Sportswear Women's Dolomite WO Short : Slim Style, Cool Comfort

Baggy cotton shorts, begone!  I’m in love with a trim new short with a flattering fit, Columbia's Dolomite WO Short.

It was love at first sight when I saw the Dolomite's smart style and felt the gorgeous woven fabric. Once I tried them on I knew it was the real thing.

I first wore the Dolomite WO short while hiking on the eastern crest of the Cascade Mountains on a very hot day under intense sun.  Since it’s getting into yellow jacket season, I was glad to be wearing longer shorts with a pretty close fit on my thighs. The more protection against bees flying up my leg, the better. The built-in UPF 50 sun protection was nice, too!

I was also grateful for the moisture-wicking fabric and the back vent behind the waist where my pack rested.  As I rested in the shade of ponderosa pines on the summit, I felt cool without getting that clammy feeling from a sweaty lower back

What I really liked most about the Women’s Dolomite WO shorts is the flexible, durable fabric and the trim fit. Thanks to the four-way stretch material, a blend of nylon and elastane, the shorts move when I move, whether it’s striding along a trail or scrambling up and down rocks when the going gets tough, with no catching or snagging on rocks or stray branches I brush past.  It makes such a difference to have nice-fitting shorts when I'm active. The style is perfectly suitable for urban outings, too!

Other thoughtful touches make the Dolomite WO shorts both comfortable and functional: a chamois-soft inner waistline to avoid chafing and flat zippered pockets to keep valuables safe. Another cool feature is the adjustable waist, so I’ll be able to cinch it in when I lose that extra five pounds.

Available in sizes two through 16 (that’s a lot of sizes!), in Grill (grey) and Tusk (dark khaki).

Fit tip: The tags say these shorts are supposed to fall a few inches below the waist, but I’m short-waisted so the high waist truly fits at my waist.

Bottom Line: The sleek cut and sensational fabric make these my new favorite hiking shorts.—J.I. (Aug ‘11)
